Fresh homemade Puff Pastry Caprese on white plate

Puff Pastry Caprese is a delightful Italian-inspired appetizer featuring flaky puff pastry layered with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, perfect for an elegant snack or starter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes, sliced
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic glaze
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet onto the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Score a 1-inch border around the edge of the puff pastry, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  4. Prick the center area inside the border lightly with a fork to prevent excessive puffing.
  5. Brush the beaten egg over the entire pastry, including the edges.
  6. Bake puff pastry for 12–15 minutes or until golden and puffed; remove from oven and let cool slightly.
  7. Layer the sliced tomatoes, mozzarella, and fresh basil leaves evenly within the border of the pastry.
  8. Drizzle olive oil and balsamic glaze over the top, and season with salt and pepper.
  9. Cut into squares and serve immediately.

Notes

For added flavor, sprinkle some freshly ground black pepper or red chili flakes; serve with a side of mixed greens for a complete appetizer.
