Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food featuring savory ground beef simmered in a tangy tomato-based sauce and served on soft buns. This hearty sandwich is perfect for a quick and satisfying weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until browned.
  2. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the beef. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Drain excess fat from the skillet, if necessary.
  4. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, tomato sauce, and water. Mix well to combine.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Toast hamburger buns if desired, then spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously onto the buns.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

For an extra kick, add a dash of hot sauce or serve with pickles and coleslaw on the side.
